3 Reasons you’re burnt out (and what to do about it)

I’m guilty of this…

As leaders or entrepreneurs, there’s one thing we thrive on: problem solving.

But sometimes… that’s a problem.

Why? 3 reasons:

Reason #1: not all problems are equal.

Of all problems you have to solve on any given day, only about 20% are most relevant to your actual progress…

List the 10 problems you “need” to solve.

Only about 2 are relevant. So, find them. Circle them. Action them.

Remember the 80/20 rule? I know you do, so I won’t elaborate further, but I will ask you this:

Can you imagine how much more productive you’d be if you made this a habit?

(Seriously, imagine the impact… and how much more time you’d have for family, and doing other things you love…)

Reason #2: sometimes we hit a threshold of diminishing returns (i.e. the returns diminish for each unit of effort). We feel productive, but we’re really just busy.

Like a hamster running non-stop on a wheel, going…. well, nowhere.

AKA burnout (you know the feeling).

So what should you do? Get off the wheel (obviously).

Solution: Step back. Take a break.

When’s the last time you took one? (be honest).

I finally did. In the past 2 weeks, we attended a church camp and visited my mom and sisters in my hometown.

It was restorative to my soul and created the white space I needed to recharge and gain perspective for the final quarter of the year…

But it was also slightly tormenting (I’ll explain). And that leads us to the next reason…

Reason #3: we tend to attach our self-worth to our performance

I was a bit of a hippy when leaving school.

No, I didn’t do drugs, I just didn’t care much about what I was going to do with my life (mostly because I didn’t see much value in myself – a story for another day).

But after having a big life epiphany back in 2016, I knucked down hard and began the long, hard, messy journey of personal growth…

I worked HARD on myself (and my career, and business…). It felt GOOD… too good.

So good, that when I wasn’t working (or performing), I felt bad about myself.

(Unfortunately, an unexpected side effect of personal growth).

Are you attaching your self-worth to your performance?

Here’s the truth:

You are MORE than what you do

Why? because you’re made in the image of God.

When you fully embrace that, you experience true freedom from judgement and self-doubt, and your self identity remains intact and unaffected by your performance (or lack thereof).

To Wrap it all up:

☑️ Stay focused on the 20%

☑️ Know when to take a break

☑️ Remember Whose you are
